Tonight, just after midnight, we hit the autumn equinox. It’s one of only two nights in the year when day and night are roughly equal. From here, the nights get longer.
A lot of people find that a bit gloomy. We don’t. The darker months are when Madeira really comes into its own.
A garden that thinks it’s somewhere warmer
Our name has a story behind it. For hundreds of years, sailors along this bit of the Fife coast said the sheltered climate reminded them of the island of Madeira. The garden still has its own little microclimate, which is why figs, kiwis and walnuts grow here.
Autumn is when you notice it most. The walled garden turns gold and rust, the woods smell of damp leaves and woodsmoke, and there’s fruit on the trees when most gardens have given up for the year.
Slow days, long nights
Autumn and winter stays are all about pace. There’s nothing to rush and nowhere you need to be.
Wrap up for a blustery walk down to Pittenweem harbour, or follow the coastal path into Anstruther for fish and chips. Come back with cold cheeks, light the fire, and let the evening stretch out.
When it gets dark early, the fun is inside (and around the firepit). There are board games, long dinners, a good book, and nights in the hot tub under a proper dark sky.
What’s new at Madeira this winter
We’ve been busy getting ready for the colder months. Here’s what’s coming:
- Hot tubs, ready when you are. You can now have your hot tub pre-heated before you arrive, so you can go from car to bubbles on your first night.
- Our new shepherd’s hut opens this winter. It’s a snug little hideaway for two, perfect for a winter escape.
Who winter at Madeira is perfect for
Couples who want a proper hideaway. Our treehouses (The Glade, The Dell and The Dreel) are especially dreamy when the leaves drop and the views open up.
Families and friends who want to be together for a birthday, a pre-Christmas get-together, or a New Year with no stress. The cottages sleep anywhere from two to nine.
Retreat groups who want quiet. Winter is when the East Neuk is at its most peaceful, which makes it the perfect time for yoga, writing or a team reset.
Mark the turn of the season
The equinox is a nice reminder to slow down before the year gets busy. If you’ve been meaning to book that break, this is your sign.
